Frequently asked about The Mummy Returns
Common questions people search for, with answers written by us at MoviesPack.
Who is the Scorpion King and why did he make a deal with Anubis?
The Scorpion King was Mathayus, a great warrior who led his army across the Sahara in a failed conquest and watched his men die in the desert. In desperation he offered his soul to Anubis in exchange for the power to defeat his enemies, and Anubis granted him command of the Army of Anubis. Once Mathayus fulfilled the bargain, Anubis claimed his soul and he was transformed into a half-human, half-scorpion creature to serve as a guardian of the Oasis of Ahm Shere.
How is Imhotep resurrected a second time after his defeat in the first film?
Imhotep's cult, led by the curator Hafez, retrieves his canopic jars and uses an ancient ritual to partially resurrect him from the remains left behind after his defeat. He is brought back in a weakened, decomposed state and can only regain his full power and immortality by defeating the Scorpion King and claiming command of the Army of Anubis before the bracelet of Anubis's countdown expires.
What is the significance of the Bracelet of Anubis and why does it threaten Alex's life?
The Bracelet of Anubis is an artifact that locks onto its wearer and acts as a guide to the Oasis of Ahm Shere, revealing the path one step at a time as the wearer travels. It also begins a countdown: if the wearer does not reach the oasis before the sun hits a certain position on the day of the vernal equinox, the bracelet kills him by drawing out his life force. Alex cannot remove it once it snaps onto his wrist, which is why Imhotep's forces keep him alive as a living compass.
Why does Anck-su-namun abandon Imhotep at the end instead of saving him?
When Imhotep falls into the pit and clings to the edge, Anck-su-namun hesitates and ultimately flees rather than sacrificing herself to save him — directly contrasting with Evelyn, who unhesitatingly risks her life to save Rick. The film frames this as a revelation of Anck-su-namun's true nature: her devotion was always self-serving, driven by desire for power and survival rather than genuine love. Imhotep, seeing her abandon him, loses the will to fight and releases his grip, falling to his death.
How is Evelyn able to remember fighting as the Egyptian princess Nefertiri?
Throughout the film Evelyn experiences vivid flashback visions of ancient Egypt and discovers she is the reincarnation of Nefertiri, daughter of Pharaoh Seti I and the sworn protector of the Bracelet of Anubis. These recovered memories give her trained combat skills she did not consciously possess, which is why she is suddenly capable of fighting Anck-su-namun — who is likewise the reincarnation of Seti's mistress — in a duel that mirrors one fought thousands of years earlier.
