Frequently asked about Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom
Common questions people search for, with answers written by us at MoviesPack.
What is the Sankara Stone and why does Mola Ram want all five of them?
The Sankara Stones are sacred Hindu artifacts said to have been given to the sage Sankara by the god Shiva on Mount Kalisa. According to the film's lore, whoever possesses all five stones will hold tremendous supernatural power — enough to conquer the world. Mola Ram believes gathering them for Kali will allow the Thuggee cult to overthrow all other religions and governments and rule in Kali's name.
Why does Indiana Jones turn evil in the middle of the film?
Indiana is forced to drink the 'Black Sleep of Kali Ma,' a ritual potion used by the Thuggee to enslave victims and make them fanatically devoted to Kali. Under its influence he loses his moral compass and nearly sacrifices Willie to the cult. He is snapped out of the trance when Short Round burns his arm with a torch, causing enough pain to break the potion's hold.
How does Indiana survive the rope bridge confrontation at the end?
Trapped on the bridge over a crocodile-filled gorge with Mola Ram and the Maharajah's guards closing in from both sides, Indiana cuts the bridge himself with a sword, sending everyone plunging. He and his companions manage to cling to the severed rope while most of the guards fall into the water. When Mola Ram grabs for the last Sankara Stone, it glows and burns his hands because he is unworthy — he loses his grip and falls to the crocodiles below.
Why is the film set in 1935, before Raiders of the Lost Ark chronologically?
The filmmakers deliberately set Temple of Doom in 1935 — one year before Raiders — making it a prequel. This was a creative choice to show Indiana before he had formed many of his strongest convictions, including his relationship with Marcus Brody and his eventual connection to the Ark storyline. The earlier timeline also explains why Short Round and Willie Scott do not appear in Raiders; their adventure together simply predates it.
What happens to the children enslaved in the Pankot Palace mines, and why were they taken?
Children from the village of Donapur and surrounding areas were kidnapped by Mola Ram's Thuggee to serve as forced labor digging for the remaining Sankara Stones in the mines beneath Pankot Palace. The cult chose children because they were easier to control and exploit for the cramped tunnel work. After Indiana defeats Mola Ram and the British colonial soldiers intervene, the surviving children are freed and able to return to their village.
