Frequently asked about Thor: The Dark World
Common questions people search for, with answers written by us at MoviesPack.
What is the Aether and why is it so dangerous?
The Aether is one of the six Infinity Stones in its liquid, parasitic form — later revealed to be the Reality Stone. It is dangerous because it can attach itself to a living host, slowly consuming them while granting the Dark Elves the power to convert matter and energy into dark matter. Malekith intended to use it during the Convergence to plunge all Nine Realms into eternal darkness.
Why does the Aether choose Jane Foster as its host?
Jane stumbles upon a hidden portal on Earth created by the Convergence — a rare alignment of all Nine Realms — and accidentally enters a chamber where the Aether was hidden. Because she made physical contact with it, the Aether instinctively bonded to her as a vessel. It does not choose her for any special quality; proximity and contact are enough for it to take a host.
Is Loki actually dead after the battle on Svartalfheim?
No. Loki fakes his death on Svartalfheim after being stabbed by Kurse, allowing him to escape undetected. He secretly takes the place of Odin on Asgard, sending the real Odin away and posing as him on the throne — a deception that sets up the events of Thor: Ragnarok. The scene at the end of the film showing Odin on the throne is in fact Loki in disguise.
What is the significance of the Convergence and why does Malekith need it?
The Convergence is an astronomically rare event in which all Nine Realms align, causing their boundaries to blur and portals to open between worlds. Malekith needs it because the Aether's power is amplified to its maximum during this alignment, making it possible to spread darkness across all realms simultaneously. Without the Convergence, releasing the Aether would only affect one realm at a time.
Why does Thor give the Aether to the Collector at the end rather than keep it on Asgard?
After the battle, Asgard already holds the Tesseract (another Infinity Stone), and Odin's advisors — likely Sif and Volstagg acting on Thor's behalf — reason that storing two Infinity Stones in the same location is too great a risk. They deliver the Aether to the Collector on Knowhere for safekeeping, believing it safer to keep the stones separated across the universe.
