Why does Odin banish Thor to Earth at the start of the film?
After Thor recklessly leads Loki, Sif, and the Warriors Three into Jotunheim and breaks the fragile truce with the Frost Giants, Odin sees that his son is arrogant, vain, and unfit to be king. As punishment, Odin strips Thor of his powers, casts him down to Earth, and enchants Mjolnir so that only one truly worthy can lift it. The exile is meant as a forced lesson in humility rather than a permanent banishment.
Why can't Thor lift Mjolnir when he first tries to reclaim it in the SHIELD compound?
Odin's enchantment binds the hammer to the worthy, and at that moment Thor is still the same selfish warrior who started a war out of pride. He hasn't yet learned humility or sacrifice, so the hammer refuses him and he collapses in despair. Only later, when he willingly offers his life to save the people of the small New Mexico town from the Destroyer, does he prove worthy and Mjolnir returns to him.
What is the truth about Loki's parentage that he discovers in the film?
Loki finds out that he is not Odin's biological son but a Frost Giant infant, the son of Laufey, who was abandoned on a battlefield because of his small size. Odin took him in after the war with Jotunheim, intending to one day use him as a bridge for peace between the realms. This revelation shatters Loki's identity and fuels his resentment toward Thor and his desire to prove himself to Odin.
Why does Loki try to destroy Jotunheim with the Bifrost?
After learning he is a Frost Giant by birth, Loki tries to annihilate his own people to prove to Odin that he is a worthy son and a true Asgardian. By aiming the Bifrost at Jotunheim and letting its destructive energy build up, he intends to wipe out the entire realm in a single act of genocide. Thor ultimately destroys the Bifrost itself to stop him, severing Asgard's easy access to the other realms.
Why does Loki let go of Gungnir and fall into the abyss at the end?
When Odin awakens and stops both sons from falling off the broken Bifrost, Loki begs for his father's approval by saying he could have done it for him. Odin's quiet 'No, Loki' confirms that nothing Loki does will earn the validation he craves, and in that moment of rejection he chooses to let go rather than be pulled back up. His fall is presented as a deliberate act of despair and defiance, setting up his return as a villain in The Avengers.
