Frequently asked about Pokémon Detective Pikachu
Common questions people search for, with answers written by us at MoviesPack.
How did Harry Goodman end up inside Pikachu's body?
After Harry was gravely injured in a car crash caused by exposure to the mutagenic R gas, Mewtwo used its psychic powers to save his life by merging his consciousness into Pikachu's body. This was meant as a temporary measure to keep Harry alive until a way could be found to reverse the process. The merge also erased Harry's memories, which is why Pikachu has no recollection of being human throughout most of the film.
What is the R gas and what does it do to Pokémon?
R is an airborne chemical agent derived from Mewtwo's DNA that was synthesized by Howard Clifford's company. When Pokémon are exposed to it they enter a feral, enraged state and lose their bond with their trainers, becoming uncontrollably aggressive. The gas was Howard's tool for triggering a citywide Pokémon rampage so he could use Mewtwo's power to transfer human minds into Pokémon bodies permanently.
Why can Tim understand Pikachu when no one else can?
The film implies it is because Pikachu's body actually contains Tim's father Harry, creating a unique paternal bond that allows Tim to perceive Pikachu's speech as real words rather than the usual 'pika pika' everyone else hears. This connection is never given a fully scientific explanation but is treated as an emotional, almost instinctual link between father and son.
What was Howard Clifford's true plan and motivation?
Howard, dying from a degenerative disease, became obsessed with achieving a permanent mind-transfer into a Pokémon body to escape his failing human form. He captured Mewtwo, harvested its DNA to create the R gas, and planned to use Mewtwo's psychic power during the Ryme City parade to forcibly merge the minds of thousands of humans with nearby Pokémon. He saw this as humanity's next evolutionary step, framing it as liberation while actually removing human free will in the process.
How is Mewtwo's role in the story different from a villain despite causing the opening accident?
Mewtwo is portrayed as morally ambiguous rather than evil — it was captured and exploited by Howard Clifford, and the car crash that injured Harry happened while Mewtwo was escaping that captivity, not out of malice. Throughout the film Mewtwo actively tries to protect Harry by hiding his consciousness in Pikachu, and at the climax it willingly separates Harry from Pikachu and restores him to his human body once Howard is defeated. Its arc is one of a misunderstood, powerful being used as a tool who ultimately acts to undo the harm caused.
