Frequently asked about Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides
Common questions people search for, with answers written by us at MoviesPack.
Why does Blackbeard need the Fountain of Youth?
Blackbeard has been told by a prophecy — delivered through his own voodoo powers and confirmed by a vision — that a one-legged man will cause his death. Believing the Fountain of Youth is the only way to cheat that fate, he sets course for it with ruthless urgency. His motivation is pure self-preservation: he is willing to sacrifice anyone, including his own daughter Angelica, to obtain eternal life.
What is the ritual required to make the Fountain of Youth work?
The ritual requires two silver chalices that once belonged to Juan Ponce de León, a mermaid's tear, and water drawn from the Fountain itself. One chalice must contain the mermaid's tear and fountain water; the other only fountain water. Whoever drinks from the chalice with the tear gains all the remaining years of the person who drinks from the other chalice — essentially stealing a life to extend one's own.
Why does Angelica drink from the wrong chalice, and what happens to her?
Jack Sparrow switches the chalices so that Blackbeard — not Angelica — drinks from the one without the mermaid's tear, causing Blackbeard to have his years drained rather than gaining them. Angelica is wounded during the confrontation and drinks from the remaining chalice to save herself, which means she gains Blackbeard's stolen years and survives. She is left stranded on a deserted island by Jack, who does not trust her despite a history between them.
What is the nature of the relationship between Angelica and Blackbeard?
Angelica claims that Blackbeard is her father, a claim that is left ambiguous throughout the film. Blackbeard himself neither confirms nor clearly denies their familial bond in any definitive way, and Angelica's deep loyalty to him — even as he treats her as expendable — keeps the audience uncertain. Jack suspects the father-daughter relationship may be a fabrication Angelica invented to give herself leverage over Blackbeard's crew, though the film never fully resolves the question.
Why do the mermaids in this film attack sailors rather than lure them benevolently?
The mermaids in On Stranger Tides are portrayed as predatory creatures who use their beauty and song to lure sailors close before dragging them underwater to drown them. This reflects older maritime folklore in which mermaids were omens of death and storms rather than friendly beings. Within the film's lore they are also highly dangerous when cornered or threatened on land, transforming from seductive to monstrous when provoked, as seen when the captured mermaid Syrena attacks her captors.
