Why is Captain Salazar trapped in the Devil's Triangle?
Years before the events of the film, a young Jack Sparrow tricked Salazar's warship into sailing into the Devil's Triangle by steering his boat through its entrance and then escaping on a rope before the Black Pearl entered. Salazar's ship was destroyed inside the Triangle, and he and his crew were cursed to remain there as undead spirits, unable to leave until the Trident of Poseidon was destroyed.
What is the Trident of Poseidon and why does everyone want it?
The Trident of Poseidon is a legendary artifact that grants its holder absolute control over the seas, including all curses bound to the ocean. Henry Turner seeks it to break the curse keeping his father Will Turner bound to the Flying Dutchman, Salazar wants it to free himself from his undead curse and finish killing all pirates, and Carina Smyth uses her father's diary to navigate to it.
How does destroying the Trident affect all the sea curses at once?
When Henry breaks the Trident against the sea floor, it shatters the source of all sea-based curses simultaneously, since the Trident is the physical anchor of Poseidon's power over the ocean. This instantly reverses Salazar's undead curse — turning him and his crew mortal and causing them to drown — and at the same time frees Will Turner from his obligation to captain the Flying Dutchman.
What is the significance of Carina's diary and her connection to Captain Barbossa?
The diary was given to Carina as an infant by a man she never knew, containing a star map leading to the Trident. Over the course of the film it becomes clear that Barbossa is her biological father — he left her the diary so she would have a chance at a better life than he could provide. Barbossa sacrifices himself to save Carina from Salazar, and his final act is revealing to her that he is her father just before he falls to his death.
Why does Will Turner's curse keep him on the Flying Dutchman and how is he finally freed?
Will was stabbed through the heart by Davy Jones in the third film and, to survive, had his heart cut out and placed in the Dead Man's Chest, binding him to captain the Flying Dutchman for ten years — ferrying the souls of those lost at sea. He can only step on land once every ten years. When Henry destroys the Trident and breaks all sea curses, Will's heart is restored to his chest and he is fully freed from the Dutchman, reuniting permanently with Elizabeth.
