Frequently asked about Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone
Common questions people search for, with answers written by us at MoviesPack.
Why did they change philosopher's stone to sorcerer's stone?
Warner Bros. retitled the film 'Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone' for the U.S. market because the American publisher Scholastic believed 'philosopher' sounded too academic and less magical for young readers. Scenes referencing the stone were filmed twice, once with each line, so both versions could be released in their respective territories.
Who was Hermione's body double?
Emma Watson's body double and stand-in on the first Harry Potter film was Flick Miles, a childhood friend of Watson who closely resembled her and stepped in for lighting setups and some background work.
What was Snape talking to Quirrell?
In the forbidden corridor scene Harry overhears, Snape is interrogating Quirrell about the Philosopher's Stone and pressing him on where his loyalties lie, which Harry mistakenly interprets as Snape trying to steal the stone when Snape is actually trying to stop Quirrell.
Why did Voldemort's curse rebound and fail to kill Harry as a baby?
Lily Potter sacrificed her life willingly to protect Harry, invoking an ancient magic based on love that Voldemort could not understand or counter. This act created a magical protection bound to Harry's skin that caused the Killing Curse to rebound onto Voldemort himself, stripping him of his body. The protection persisted as long as Harry could call home the place where his mother's blood lived — his Aunt Petunia's house.
How did Voldemort survive after his curse rebounded?
Although Voldemort lost his physical body, he had already taken measures to anchor his soul to the living world through Horcruxes — objects in which he had hidden fragments of his soul. In the immediate aftermath, a weakened remnant of his spirit fled and latched onto Professor Quirrell, possessing him and sharing his body. This parasitic existence sustained Voldemort until he could find a path back to full power.
Why could Harry pull the Philosopher's Stone from the Mirror of Erised but Quirrell could not?
Dumbledore enchanted the Mirror so that only a person who wanted to find the Stone but not use it would be able to retrieve it. Quirrell and Voldemort desired the Stone solely to gain immortality, so when Quirrell looked into the Mirror he saw himself presenting it to his master — but the Stone itself never appeared in his pocket. Harry, who wanted to find the Stone but had no intention of using it for personal gain, saw himself pocketing it in the reflection, and the Stone materialised in his hand at that moment.
Why does Voldemort's face appear on the back of Quirrell's head?
Quirrell allowed Voldemort's incorporeal spirit to possess him fully, and Voldemort's face manifesting on the back of Quirrell's skull is a visual representation of that possession — Voldemort literally sharing and dominating Quirrell's body. Quirrell wore his turban at all times to conceal this, explaining the smell of garlic he attributed to warding off a vampire. The arrangement gave Voldemort a physical presence and senses while he remained too weak to embody his own form.
Why did touching Harry burn and destroy Quirrell?
The same magical protection Lily's sacrifice had placed on Harry was still active within him. When Quirrell — and by extension Voldemort — physically touched Harry, the love-based enchantment reacted violently against Voldemort's dark presence, causing Quirrell's flesh to blister and crumble. Dumbledore later explains to Harry that Quirrell, full of hatred and dedicated entirely to Voldemort's service, could not bear contact with someone carrying such a powerful mark of selfless love.
