Frequently asked about Big Fish
Common questions people search for, with answers written by us at MoviesPack.
What does the ending of Big Fish mean when Will carries Edward into the river?
As Edward is dying in the hospital, he asks Will to tell him how he goes. Will improvises a final tall tale in which he carries his father out of the hospital, through a crowd of all the colorful people from his stories, and lays him in the river where Edward transforms into the giant catfish he always claimed to be. The moment represents Will finally embracing his father's mythic way of seeing the world, giving Edward the legendary death he would have wanted.
Were Edward Bloom's tall tales actually true?
The film reveals that most of Edward's stories were embellished versions of real events and real people. At his funeral, Will meets the actual giant, the conjoined singers, Karl, and the townspeople of Spectre, all of whom existed but were far more ordinary than Edward described. The point is that Edward didn't lie so much as reshape his life into something larger and more meaningful through storytelling.
What is the significance of the town of Spectre in Big Fish?
Spectre is a too-perfect town Edward stumbles into as a young man, where everyone walks barefoot and no one ever wants to leave. He flees because settling there would mean ending his journey before it has truly begun. Years later he returns to find Spectre impoverished and buys it to save it, showing that paradise has to be earned and maintained, not simply discovered.
Who is the witch with the glass eye and what does she symbolize?
As a boy, Edward visits a swamp witch whose glass eye shows people exactly how they will die. Seeing his own death frees Edward from fear because he knows every dangerous situation he survives cannot be the one that kills him. The witch represents the idea that knowing your ending lets you live boldly, which is the philosophy that fuels all of Edward's adventures.
Why was Will so estranged from his father Edward at the start of the film?
Will, a journalist who deals in facts, grew up overshadowed by Edward's constant storytelling and felt he never truly knew the real man behind the myths. The breaking point came at Will's wedding when Edward told the catfish story yet again, making the day about himself. The film's emotional arc is Will learning that his father's stories were not a wall hiding the truth but the truest expression of who Edward was.
