Why does Nameless ultimately decide not to kill the King of Qin?
After hearing Broken Sword's philosophy, Nameless realizes that the King's vision of a unified China under 'Our Land' (Tianxia) would end the constant wars between the warring states and bring peace to the greater population. He concludes that sacrificing his personal revenge for the assassinated kings of Zhao serves a higher good, so he abandons the killing strike even though he has the King at his mercy.
What do the different colors used in each retelling of the story represent?
Each color-coded segment reflects a different emotional truth and narrator's perspective rather than literal events. Red represents the lie Nameless tells the King, full of jealousy and passion; blue is the King's skeptical counter-version, cooler and more detached; white reveals the true history of Broken Sword and Flying Snow, marked by honesty and grief; and green depicts the idealized memory of their earlier love. The shifting palettes underline that 'truth' in the film is layered and emotional.
Why did Broken Sword spare the King of Qin three years earlier?
While inside the palace with a clear chance to assassinate the King, Broken Sword wrote the calligraphy character for 'sword' and realized its highest meaning was the absence of the sword, the end of killing. He understood that only the King's conquest could unite the warring states and stop endless bloodshed, so he withdrew his blade, an act that devastated Flying Snow and drove them apart.
Why does Flying Snow kill Broken Sword at the end?
Flying Snow cannot forgive Broken Sword for stopping Nameless from completing the assassination, which she sees as a second betrayal of her murdered father and the kingdom of Zhao. In her rage she stabs him, but Broken Sword deliberately does not defend himself, accepting her blade as a final act of love. Overcome by grief, she then takes her own life with the same sword, dying alongside him.
Why is Nameless executed even after the King spares his life in spirit?
The King is moved by Nameless's restraint and personally hesitates, but his ministers insist that the law of Qin cannot be bent: anyone who enters the palace with intent to kill the ruler must be put to death to preserve order. The King reluctantly orders the execution to uphold the very rule of law that 'Tianxia' is meant to establish, and Nameless willingly accepts death as the price of his choice. He is honored with a hero's funeral.
