Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3
James Gunn ensemble superhero comedy with the same blend of crude humor, heart, gore-tinged action and chosen-family theme.

Gunn's monster/parasite horror-comedy directly echoes Starro and the body-horror humor of The Suicide Squad.

Deadpool
R-rated, ultra-violent, irreverent comic-book antihero movie - the closest non-Gunn tonal match outside DC.

Deadpool 2
R-rated antihero superhero team comedy with bloody humor and a 'bad guys on a mission' structure mirroring Task Force X.

Superman
James Gunn's next DC film, sharing his comic-book sensibility and now part of the same DCU continuity.

The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special
James Gunn-directed comedic superhero ensemble with the same tone, even if shorter and lighter.

PG: Psycho Goreman

Same DCEU sandbox with an anti-hero lead, though tonally more straight-faced than Gunn's film.

DCEU superhero entry from the same era, sharing universe and audience.

Predator
Elite squad on a deadly jungle mission against a monstrous alien - a clear structural and tonal touchstone for Task Force X on Corto Maltese.

Megamind
Animated supervillain-as-protagonist comedy - same anti-hero comic-book sensibility in a family register.

Frequently asked about The Suicide Squad
Common questions people search for, with answers written by us at MoviesPack.
What is Project Starfish, and why is the US government involved?
Project Starfish is a secret experiment run at Jotunheim, a Nazi-era prison-turned-laboratory on the fictional island of Corto Maltese, where the alien creature Starro the Conqueror has been kept captive and studied for decades. The US government — specifically Amanda Waller and ARGUS — covertly funded the project and want it buried before a new anti-American regime takes power on the island. Their goal is not to stop Starro but to destroy all evidence of American involvement, even at the cost of the squad's lives.
How does Starro the Conqueror control people?
Starro reproduces by releasing tiny starfish-like spores that latch onto a victim's face and burrow into their nervous system. Once attached, the spore takes over the host's motor control and consciousness, turning them into a drone that acts as an extension of Starro's collective hive mind. The hosts remain alive but are fully aware of what is happening to them — a detail Ratcatcher 2 learns from a dying victim, which motivates her to fight harder to stop Starro.
Why does Harley Quinn escape and kill General Valle on her own?
After being captured, Harley is held by General Valle, the leader of Corto Maltese's new military junta, who attempts to use her as a trophy and then threatens her life. Harley seizes an opportunity, escapes on her own in a visually stylized breakout sequence, and kills Valle because he revealed himself to be cruel and posed an immediate threat to her. Her solo escape is separate from the squad's mission and reflects her unpredictable, self-determined nature — she rejoins Bloodsport's team afterward once their paths converge.
How is Starro ultimately defeated?
After Starro is freed from Jotunheim by the explosion and begins rampaging through the city — killing thousands by enslaving them with its spores — Ratcatcher 2 summons an enormous swarm of rats that devour Starro from the inside. The killing blow is delivered when King Shark tears open Starro's body, allowing the rats to flood in and destroy it. Before dying, Starro communicates that it was once free, floating in space and gazing at the stars, adding a brief moment of unexpected pathos to the creature's death.
What leverage does Bloodsport use to stop Amanda Waller from killing the surviving squad members at the end?
Bloodsport threatens to leak classified files he has obtained — the same evidence implicating the US government in funding Project Starfish — to the press unless Waller lets the surviving members walk free without detonating their implanted neck bombs. Since exposure of American involvement in the Corto Maltese experiments would be a major political scandal, Waller reluctantly agrees. It is a direct reversal of the power dynamic she has held over the squad throughout the entire film.
