Frequently asked about A Bug's Life
Common questions people search for, with answers written by us at MoviesPack.
Why does Flik's grain-harvesting invention get destroyed at the start of the film?
Flik built a harvesting machine intended to speed up food collection for the grasshoppers' annual tribute. During a demonstration it malfunctioned and knocked the entire offering pile into the pond, leaving the colony with nothing to offer Hopper. The accident sets the entire plot in motion, as the colony must scramble to replace the lost food.
Why do the grasshoppers bother with such a small ant colony — couldn't they just eat elsewhere?
Hopper himself answers this directly when confronted by his lieutenant Molt: the ants cannot be allowed to realize they outnumber the grasshoppers, because if one colony stands up to them, all colonies will. The food itself is almost secondary — maintaining the ants' fear and submission is the real reason Hopper keeps returning. It is a protection racket built on psychological control, not nutrition.
How do the circus bugs end up convincing Flik they are real warrior bugs?
There is no real convincing — it is a mutual misunderstanding. Flik witnesses the bugs fighting off a bird (actually a staged act where P.T. Flea fires 'cannonball' bugs at a fake bird prop) and assumes they are hardened fighters. The circus bugs, desperate for work after being fired by P.T. Flea, realize Flik thinks they are warriors and go along with the mistake rather than admit the truth.
What causes Hopper to be killed at the end, and why can't he escape the bird?
During the climax, Flik lures Hopper toward a bird's nest in a rainstorm. Hopper, believing it to be the fake bird the ants used earlier as part of their plan, charges it confidently — only to discover it is a real bird with hungry chicks. Because he is already committed to the attack when he realizes his mistake, he cannot escape in time and is seized and fed to the chicks. His overconfidence, born from the earlier fake-bird ruse, is precisely what kills him.
Why does Princess Atta initially oppose Flik throughout most of the film?
Atta is under enormous pressure as the colony's heir apparent, desperate to prove herself a competent leader to both her mother the Queen and the rest of the colony. Flik's constant blunders make him a liability in her eyes, and associating with him risks her credibility at the worst possible time. Her opposition softens as she watches him show genuine courage and inspire the colony, ultimately recognizing that his optimism is a strength, not a recklessness.
