Why is Sung Jinwoo called the weakest hunter, and what changes after the Double Dungeon incident?
Sung Jinwoo is ranked E-class, the lowest possible hunter grade, meaning his combat stats and mana are far below average — he essentially has no ability to fight on his own. During the Double Dungeon incident, he is mortally wounded but instead of dying he receives a mysterious System prompt, waking up in a hospital with a unique Player status that allows him to gain experience points and level up like a character in a video game, an ability no other hunter possesses. From that point on, he begins growing at an exponential rate while concealing his true power.
What is the System, and who or what created it?
The System is an interface that appears exclusively to Sung Jinwoo, granting him quests, stat increases, skill acquisitions, and the ability to resurrect and command the dead as shadow soldiers. Its true origin is tied to the Absolute Being — a god-like entity who designed the entire hunter and gate phenomenon as a means of cultivating a vessel strong enough to eventually defeat the Monarchs. The System is essentially a training program built into a Player status, and Jinwoo is the intended inheritor of the Rulers' power.
Who are the Monarchs, and why do they want to invade Earth?
The Monarchs are ancient, immensely powerful beings — including the Monarchs of Destruction, White Flames, and others — who were created by the Absolute Being and have been at war with the Rulers for eons. They view Earth as a target for destruction partly out of hatred for the Rulers who protect it, and partly as a path to acquiring the power of the Absolute Being's vessel. Their invasion hinges on weakening Earth's defenses by escalating dungeon breaks, and Antares, the Monarch of Destruction, leads the final assault.
What is the Shadow Monarch's power, and how does Jinwoo come to fully inherit it?
The Shadow Monarch Ashborn is one of the Monarchs who turned against his kin; his power allows him to extract and preserve the shadows of the dead, converting fallen enemies and allies alike into an undying army. After observing Jinwoo's growth through the System, Ashborn chooses him as a successor and ultimately merges with him, transferring the entirety of the Shadow Monarch's power and his vast army of shadow soldiers — including the elite Beru and the knight Igris — to Jinwoo. This inheritance makes Jinwoo effectively the new Shadow Monarch while retaining his human identity.
How does the final battle against the Monarchs end, and what sacrifice does Jinwoo make?
In the climactic battle, Jinwoo faces Antares and the combined Monarch forces, ultimately defeating Antares by pushing his Shadow Monarch powers to their absolute limit. The cost is devastating — many of his shadow soldiers are lost, and reality itself is on the verge of collapse. Jinwoo is offered the chance to reset time by the Rulers, which he accepts, essentially erasing the entire hunter era and the gate phenomenon so that his loved ones can live in a world without those horrors; he retains his memories of the original timeline while everyone else, including his family, lives unaware of the catastrophe that was averted.
