The Criminal Minds Formula

The Behavioral Analysis Unit wasn't just a crime procedural — it was a show about people who **choose to live inside the worst of humanity so the rest of us don't have to.** The unsub-of-the-week structure worked because of the team: Garcia's brightness against Morgan's intensity, Reid's autism-coded genius against Hotch's relentless gravity. Fifteen seasons. The formula worked. These shows scratch the same itch from different angles. [Use our tool: Shows Like Criminal Minds](/shows/similar/criminal-minds) — algorithmically matched

The Closest Matches

Mindhunter
01

Mindhunter

2017–2019
8.6IMDb
It's 1977, and two FBI agents — Holden Ford and Bill Tench — have an idea that the Bureau could catch violent criminals more effectively if they understood why those criminals think the way they do. They start interviewing convicted serial killers: Ed Kemper, who killed his grandparents at 15 and his mother at 21. Dennis Rader, the BTK killer. Charles Manson. They're inventing criminal profiling from scratch, and the conversations are deeply unsettling because the killers are articulate and the agents start understanding them. David Fincher set the tone with the first two episodes.
Why it matters

This is where Criminal Minds came from. Mindhunter is the origin story of the BAU — watching real profiling develop in real time, with the actual serial killers as recurring characters.

Hannibal
02

Hannibal

2013–2015
8.6IMDb
Will Graham has an extraordinary and dangerous ability: he can enter the mind of a killer so completely that he can reconstruct not just what happened but why it felt right to the person who did it. The FBI sends him to work with a psychiatrist named Hannibal Lecter, who is also a serial killer, who sees Will's ability as kinship and wants to develop it. The show tracks what happens to a man who can think like a killer when someone capable of becoming his closest friend is shaping that capacity from the inside. The food scenes are grotesque and gorgeous simultaneously.
Why it matters

If Criminal Minds is the procedural version of profiling — team intact, case per episode — Hannibal is what happens when the profiler's ability to think like a killer starts eroding the boundary between understanding and becoming.

Bones
03

Bones

2005–2017
7.8IMDb
Dr. Temperance Brennan is a forensic anthropologist who can read a victim's life history from skeletal remains. FBI Agent Seeley Booth can't do that, but he can read people. They work together to solve murders for twelve seasons, and the show is as much about their partnership — the way two people with completely different ways of understanding the world build something together — as it is about the cases. The ensemble of squints in Brennan's lab becomes a genuine found family.
Why it matters

The team dynamic, the case-of-the-week structure, and the long-running relationship tension. Bones makes you invest in the team as much as the cases.

The Profiling and Psychology Shows

Prodigal Son
04

Prodigal Son

2019–2021
8.0IMDb
Malcolm Bright is a criminal profiler for the NYPD with an unusual credential: his father, Martin Whitly, is a notorious serial killer known as the Surgeon, currently in a psychiatric facility. Malcolm uses what he knows about his father — and what his father taught him to see — to help solve cases, while his father watches from behind glass and offers insights that are always useful and never free. Tom Payne and Michael Sheen are electric together. Cancelled after two seasons.
Dexter
05

Dexter

2006–2021
8.6IMDb
Dexter Morgan is a blood spatter analyst for Miami Metro PD who is also a serial killer — one who only kills other killers, following a code taught to him by his adoptive father. He processes evidence for murders during the day and commits them at night. The show explores the same territory as Criminal Minds from the opposite side: not hunting a killer but watching one rationalize what he is, season by season. The Trinity Killer arc in Season 4 is flawless.
Perception
06

Perception

2012–2015
7.7IMDb
Dr. Daniel Pierce is a neuroscience professor with paranoid schizophrenia. The FBI recruits him as a consultant because his hallucinations — which he's learned to analyze rather than dismiss — occasionally reveal things about cases that conventional methods miss. Each week, a new case; each week, Daniel's perception of reality is part of the puzzle. Lighter procedural than Criminal Minds but shares its interest in the "brilliant mind with a specific condition" character type.
Section 4

The Serial Killer Dramas

You
07

You

2018–present
7.7IMDb
Joe Goldberg is a bookshop manager who becomes obsessed with women he meets and eliminates anyone who threatens his access to them. The show is told from Joe's perspective, with his rationalizing voiceover making his logic feel almost reasonable — which is the whole disturbing point. Where Criminal Minds shows you the killer from the outside and asks you to understand them through a team's analysis, You puts you inside the killer's head and makes you notice when you're nodding along.
Killing Eve
08

Killing Eve

2018–2022
8.3IMDb
Eve Polastri is supposed to be doing routine MI5 desk work. She gets assigned to a case involving an assassin named Villanelle, and her fixation on Villanelle becomes something the show refuses to categorize. Villanelle becomes equally fixated on the woman tracking her. The cat-and-mouse dynamic is explicitly romantic. Sandra Oh and Jodie Comer create chemistry that transcends the show's sometimes uneven plotting. The first two seasons are exceptional.
The Fall
09

The Fall

2013–2016
8.1IMDb
A serial killer is strangling professional women in Belfast. DSI Stella Gibson arrives from London to assess the investigation and immediately identifies the pattern everyone else missed. The show runs two storylines in parallel — the investigation and the killer's home life as a family man and grief counselor — with the same amount of screen time given to both. Gillian Anderson is cold and precise. Jamie Dornan's killer is frightening precisely because he is so ordinary.
Section 5

The FBI Team Shows

The Mentalist
10

The Mentalist

2008–2015
8.1IMDb
Patrick Jane was a fake psychic whose family was murdered by a serial killer called Red John — a killer he'd been publicly mocking on television. Now he consults for the California Bureau of Investigation, using his extraordinary ability to read people to solve cases and, eventually, find Red John. He has no actual powers but treats human psychology like a system he's mastered. Seven seasons of satisfying procedural with a long-running serial killer arc underneath. Simon Baker's charisma makes the whole thing work.
NCIS
11

NCIS

2003–present
7.7IMDb
The Naval Criminal Investigative Service investigates crimes involving Navy and Marine Corps personnel. Gibbs runs the team: a former Marine sniper who communicates primarily through rules and head slaps. Each episode brings a new case; the team's chemistry is the constant. The longest-running procedural drama on American TV. Twenty-plus seasons and it still finds new audiences — same comfort food structure as Criminal Minds, just with a military lens.
Body of Proof
12

Body of Proof

2011–2013
7.1IMDb
Dr. Megan Hunt was a brilliant neurosurgeon until a car accident damaged her hands. She became a medical examiner instead — and brings the same precision to reading bodies that she once applied to operating on brains. Three seasons of forensic procedural as Hunt notices things at crime scenes that detectives routinely miss, and argues with the detectives about it constantly. Solid procedural in the Criminal Minds comfort zone.
Section 6

The International Crime Shows

13

CID

1998–2018
7.5IMDb
ACP Pradyuman leads a specialized crime investigation unit in Mumbai that takes on cases too complex for regular police — kidnappings with elaborate setups, murders made to look like accidents, conspiracies with layers of misdirection. Two-plus decades of Indian crime television, with the same ensemble cast dynamic as Criminal Minds: a team of specialists who've worked together long enough to operate like a single organism, each bringing a different capability to the table.
Luther
14

Luther

2010–2019
8.4IMDb
DCI John Luther is a brilliant detective who solves things through instinct and intensity, and his methods keep landing him in trouble with internal affairs. His personal life is a wreck. His first case involves a woman named Alice Morgan, who he immediately identifies as the killer but can never prove it — and who then becomes an ally of sorts because she finds him interesting. Idris Elba gives one of TV's great performances in a show built on the tension between Luther's instincts (usually right) and his methods (often illegal).
Wentworth
15

Wentworth

2013–2021
8.2IMDb
Bea Smith goes to Wentworth Detention Centre for attempted murder and finds herself in a prison with its own power structure — one that's about to be disrupted. The show tracks who controls the prison block, what violence costs, and what people are capable of when institutional walls — both literal and moral — remove the usual constraints. More dramatic than procedural, but the character psychology is as deep as any profiling show, and the questions about what makes someone a predator versus a survivor are Criminal Minds territory.
