Frequently asked about Wonder Woman
Common questions people search for, with answers written by us at MoviesPack.
Why does Diana believe Ares is responsible for World War I?
Diana was raised on Themyscira with her mother Queen Hippolyta's account that Ares, the God of War, corrupted humanity and could one day plunge the world into war again. When Steve Trevor arrives and describes the devastating global conflict, Diana concludes Ares must be manipulating the war from behind the scenes. She believes killing Ares will break his influence over humanity and end the fighting immediately.
Who is actually Ares in the film, and how does his reveal reframe the story?
Ares turns out to be Sir Patrick Morgan, the British official who funded Steve's mission and sat on the War Council — not General Ludendorff, whom Diana had suspected and killed. The twist reveals Diana was wrong to believe eliminating one figure would end the war, because Ares does not directly control humans but instead subtly whispers ideas into their minds and lets human nature do the rest. This forces Diana to confront that humanity's capacity for violence is not purely Ares's doing.
What is the significance of the God Killer sword, and why does it not ultimately matter?
Diana spends most of the film believing the ornate sword kept in Themyscira's tower — called the God Killer — is the weapon destined to slay Ares. Ares himself destroys the sword during their final battle to prove it was never the true God Killer. The real God Killer is Diana herself, a demi-god born as Zeus's daughter and the only being powerful enough to destroy Ares.
Why does Steve Trevor sacrifice himself by blowing up the plane?
General Ludendorff's chief chemist, Dr. Poison, has loaded a plane with a new devastating gas that would kill millions if released over London. With no way to disarm it in time on the ground, Steve commandeers the plane and detonates it in the air, sacrificing himself to prevent mass casualties. His death also serves as the emotional catalyst that pushes Diana — momentarily consumed by grief and rage — to ultimately choose love over hatred when she faces Ares.
What does Diana learn about her true origin on Themyscira?
Diana was told as a child that she was sculpted from clay by her mother Hippolyta and brought to life by Zeus. In the climactic confrontation, Ares reveals — and Diana comes to accept — that she is actually the daughter of Zeus and Hippolyta, making her a demi-god. The clay story was a protective lie Hippolyta told to hide Diana from Ares, who would have sought to destroy Zeus's secret weapon before she could come into her power.
