Frequently asked about Raya and the Last Dragon
Common questions people search for, with answers written by us at MoviesPack.
What are the Druun, and where do they come from?
The Druun are mindless, plague-like spirits that feed on disunity and distrust among humans. According to the film's lore, they emerged from the divisions between the five clans of Kumandra — Heart, Fang, Talon, Spine, and Tail — after the people stopped living in harmony. They consume humans by turning them to stone, and can only be destroyed or repelled by the magic of dragons.
Why did Sisu sacrifice herself and what did it accomplish?
Sisu believed that Namaari could be reasoned with and that trust had to be extended first before it could be reciprocated. She approached Namaari unarmed as an act of faith, but Namaari — startled and frightened — shot her with a crossbow bolt, inadvertently killing her. Sisu's death caused the Druun to surge again, but her sacrifice ultimately demonstrated that trust must be freely given to break the cycle of fear, inspiring Raya and the others to put down their weapons and unite.
How does the Dragon Gem work, and why does breaking it release the Druun?
The Dragon Gem was created by the last six dragons, who pooled their magic into it to drive the Druun away and save the remaining humans. It functioned as a concentrated vessel of dragon magic — the same force that is antithetical to the Druun. When the Gem was shattered during the confrontation between Raya and Namaari, its magic was dispersed and no longer strong enough to hold the Druun at bay, allowing them to return and spread across Kumandra.
Why did Namaari betray Raya at the Heart Gem?
Namaari did not intend to release the Druun — she only wanted to seize the Gem for Fang. Her clan chief mother had ambitions for Fang to become the dominant land by controlling the Gem's power. When Namaari revealed herself to the other guards, the ensuing struggle caused the Gem to fall and shatter, an outcome she did not anticipate. The act was driven by her loyalty to Fang and her mother's agenda rather than malice toward Raya personally.
How are Raya and her father revived at the end after being turned to stone?
When the five lands' representatives each sacrifice themselves by willingly turning to stone — an act of collective trust — the united human faith recreates the conditions that originally empowered the dragons. This act of unity channels magic back through Sisu, whose spirit is still tied to the world, and the restored dragon magic obliterates the Druun and reverses the petrification of everyone they had claimed, including Raya's father Chief Benja.
