Frequently asked about GoldenEye
Common questions people search for, with answers written by us at MoviesPack.
Why did Alec Trevelyan (006) betray MI6 and become the villain?
Alec Trevelyan was the son of Lienz Cossacks — Soviet soldiers who fought alongside the Nazis and were handed back to Stalin by the British after World War II, knowing they faced execution. His parents survived the betrayal but his father killed his mother and himself out of shame and despair. Alec spent his entire career at MI6 seeking revenge against the British government for what he saw as a calculated betrayal of his people.
What is the GoldenEye weapon and how does it work?
GoldenEye is the codename for a pair of Soviet Cold War-era satellite weapons, each capable of generating a focused electromagnetic pulse (EMP) burst from orbit. When detonated above a target city, the EMP destroys all electronic systems and circuitry within range without conventional physical destruction. Trevelyan's plan is to fire the weapon over London to wipe the city's financial records and cover the theft of billions from the Bank of England.
How did Bond and Alec both survive the Archangel chemical weapons facility explosion in the opening?
Bond escapes by a motorcycle dive off a cliff to catch a falling plane, flying it to safety before the facility's self-destruct explosion reaches him. Alec appears to be shot and killed by General Ourumov inside the facility, but it is later revealed this was staged — Ourumov fired blanks and Alec faked his death to begin building his criminal operation, the Janus syndicate, using his presumed-dead status as cover.
What is the significance of the tank chase scene in St. Petersburg — what is Bond actually trying to accomplish?
Bond steals a Russian T-55 tank from a military convoy in order to chase down General Ourumov, who has kidnapped Natalya Simonova, the one surviving programmer who knows how to operate the GoldenEye satellite system. Bond's goal is not simply to cause destruction but to intercept Ourumov's armored train before it leaves the city, since Natalya is the only person who can help him locate and disable the satellite control station in Cuba.
Why does Natalya survive the Tiger helicopter ambush at the Severnaya station when all her colleagues are killed?
Natalya survives because she had stepped away from the main operations room to argue privately with her colleague Boris at the moment the GoldenEye EMP was triggered by the helicopter. The EMP blast and subsequent attack kill everyone in the central facility, but Natalya was in a separate area and is merely knocked unconscious rather than killed. Her survival, and Boris's — who was outside communicating with Trevelyan's team — are both the result of simply being away from the epicenter at the critical moment.
