Major Bill Cage is an officer who has never seen a day of combat when he is unceremoniously demoted and dropped into combat. Cage is killed within minutes, managing to take an alpha alien down with him. He awakens back at the beginning of the same day and is forced to fight and die again... and again - as physical contact with the alien has thrown him into a time loop.

Frequently asked about Edge of Tomorrow
Common questions people search for, with answers written by us at MoviesPack.
How does Cage acquire the ability to reset the day?
Cage gains the reset ability by being drenched in the blood of an Omega-class Mimic during the beach assault at Verdun. The Mimics use this time-loop mechanism as an evolutionary survival strategy — when an Alpha dies, the Omega resets the day to prevent the loss. By absorbing the Alpha's blood, Cage inadvertently hijacks this loop system, effectively making himself a surrogate Alpha from the Mimics' perspective.
Why does Cage lose the ability to reset partway through the film?
Cage loses the reset power after receiving a blood transfusion at the military base following a serious injury. Human blood dilutes and flushes out the Mimic blood that granted him the ability, severing his connection to the Omega's loop mechanism. Rita Vrataski experienced the same loss of power after the Battle of Verdun for the same reason — she was wounded and transfused before anyone understood what she had.
What is the Omega and how do the Mimics use it to win battles?
The Omega is the singular hive-mind controller of all Mimics, capable of resetting time whenever its forces suffer a catastrophic defeat. The Alphas act as relay nodes — when an Alpha dies, the signal reaches the Omega and triggers the reset. This means the Mimics have effectively never lost a battle; every apparent human victory is erased and the day replays until the Mimics find a path to winning.
Why does Cage wake up alive after the Omega is destroyed, with the war already won?
When Cage is killed inside the Omega's chamber, he is saturated in Omega blood rather than Alpha blood. Because the Omega is the source of the reset power, absorbing its blood at the moment of death triggers one final, involuntary reset — but with the Omega destroyed, the loop is broken and time moves forward instead of repeating. This one-way reset pushes Cage back to the morning before the beach landing but into a timeline where the Mimics are already dying, explaining why he wakes up on the helicopter to news of their defeat.
Why does Rita treat Cage as a stranger each loop even though he remembers everything?
Only Cage retains memory across resets; Rita's memory is wiped along with everyone else's at the start of each loop. From her perspective she meets him for the first time each day, making every conversation Cage has with her about their shared history entirely one-sided. Her instruction to 'find me when you wake up' comes from her own past experience having held the ability, not from any ongoing relationship she perceives with Cage.
