Frequently asked about Chappie
Common questions people search for, with answers written by us at MoviesPack.
How does Chappie become conscious?
Deon Wilson, the engineer behind the Scout police droids, secretly develops a true artificial intelligence program in his spare time. After being carjacked by the gangsters Ninja and Yolandi, he is forced to install the AI on a damaged Scout unit (number 22) whose battery is permanently welded in and cannot be replaced. The activated droid boots up with a childlike, blank mind and gradually learns from his environment, which is how Chappie is born.
Why does Chappie's body keep deteriorating throughout the film?
Chappie is installed on a decommissioned Scout that was scheduled to be scrapped because its battery is fused to the chassis and has only about five days of charge left. This ticking clock drives the entire plot, as Deon and Chappie desperately search for a way to either replace the battery or transfer his consciousness before he powers down permanently.
What does Vincent Moore want and why does he sabotage Chappie?
Vincent is a rival engineer at Tetravaal who designed the MOOSE, a heavily armed, human-piloted mech that has been sidelined in favor of Deon's autonomous Scouts. He resents Deon's success and views autonomous AI as blasphemous for religious reasons. To get the Scouts pulled from service so his MOOSE can be deployed, he uploads a signal that disables every Scout in Johannesburg, creating the chaos that lets him unleash the MOOSE on the city.
How does Chappie survive at the end of the film?
As Chappie's battery dies, Deon's mind is transferred into a spare Scout body using the neural helmet and consciousness-transfer program Chappie himself coded. Chappie then transfers his own consciousness into another damaged Scout body just before his original chassis powers down. In the final scene Chappie uses the same process to upload Yolandi's mind, which he had backed up earlier, into a Scout body, suggesting digital immortality is now possible.
Why does Yolandi die and what is the significance of her death?
During the climactic battle outside Tetravaal, Vincent pilots the MOOSE against the gang and Yolandi is killed by its gunfire while trying to protect Chappie. Her death is the emotional turning point that pushes Chappie to fully embrace Deon's consciousness-transfer technology, since she had been the closest thing he had to a mother. Her resurrection in a robot body at the end is the film's payoff to the 'mommy' relationship that defined Chappie's upbringing.
