Frequently asked about Beauty and the Beast
Common questions people search for, with answers written by us at MoviesPack.
Why was the Prince cursed to become the Beast?
An enchantress disguised as an old beggar woman offered the Prince a rose in exchange for shelter on a cold night. When he turned her away, mocking her appearance, she revealed her true form and transformed him into a beast as punishment for his cruelty and vanity. His entire household staff was also enchanted into objects as a consequence of serving such a heartless master.
What happens if the Beast doesn't break the curse before the last rose petal falls?
If the enchanted rose loses its final petal before the Beast earns true love, the curse becomes permanent — he will remain a beast forever. The enchantress also wiped the kingdom's memory of the Prince, so no one outside the castle knows he exists, leaving him completely isolated with no hope of rescue from the outside world.
Why does Gaston want to commit Maurice to the asylum?
Maurice returns from the Beast's castle claiming a monster kidnapped Belle, and Gaston initially tries to use this as leverage — threatening to have Maurice institutionalized unless Belle agrees to marry him. When Belle refuses and produces the enchanted mirror as proof of the Beast's existence, Gaston instead uses it to whip the village into a mob, framing his desire to kill a romantic rival as heroic protection of the town.
How does Belle's mother connect to the film's backstory?
The 2017 live-action version adds a subplot in which the enchanted book in the Beast's library can transport visitors to any place in the world. Belle and the Beast use it to visit Paris, where they discover her mother died of plague, and that her father Maurice took young Belle away to protect her from the disease. This backstory, absent from the original animated film, gives Belle's father more depth and explains why he is so protective of her.
Why do the enchanted servants age and become less human over time?
The curse degrades the servants progressively — the longer it goes unbroken, the more they lose their human qualities and risk becoming inanimate objects permanently. This is illustrated most clearly with Cogsworth, Lumiere, and Mrs. Potts, who fear they are forgetting what it felt like to be human. The ticking enchanted rose therefore creates urgency not just for the Beast but for every member of the household staff.
