How do Nicky and Morgan get pulled into organized crime?
Morgan steals a necklace from a postal store intending to bury it with their dying grandmother as a sentimental gift. This petty theft triggers a blackmail scheme that forces both siblings into a series of criminal assignments — grave robbing, drug running, and increasingly dangerous jobs — carried out for people they don't understand and can't refuse.
Who is Annette and what is her role in the crime operation?
Annette, played by Elizabeth Perkins, is Morgan's prospective mother-in-law, initially presented as an ordinary family figure. The season finale reveals she is the Italian mob boss orchestrating the entire cartel operation the siblings have been unwittingly serving. The twist is designed to recontextualize every earlier scene she appears in.
Why does Annette give the necklace back to Morgan at the end?
Returning the necklace is not a gesture of goodwill — it is a mechanism of control. By presenting it as a gift, Annette signals that she now holds authority over Morgan and the entire Dardano family. She also makes clear that Morgan must not break off the engagement to her son Max, using the necklace as a symbol of the family's permanent entanglement with the mob.
Why are Nicky and Morgan spared during the Florida confrontation?
Annette intervenes specifically to protect Morgan because Morgan is engaged to her son Max, and she does not want to jeopardize that relationship by allowing Morgan to be killed. Nicky survives as collateral of that same protection. Their survival is not earned through cunning but is entirely contingent on Annette's personal interest in keeping the engagement intact.
What tension does Nicky face as a pastor throughout the series?
Nicky is openly gay but serves a congregation that accepts gay people as individuals while officially rejecting homosexuality as a practice. As his romantic relationship with a contractor becomes more serious, he is caught between his genuine faith, his desire for acceptance from his church community, and his unwillingness to be fully honest — a personal contradiction that drives many of his worst decisions across the season.
