The Walking Dead Formula

The zombies were never really the point. Robert Kirkman's genius — and what made the show run for eleven seasons — was using the apocalypse as a pressure cooker for human nature. **What happens when civilization collapses? Who gets to decide the rules? How much do you sacrifice to keep the people you love alive?** The walkers were just the backdrop. The human conflicts were the show. These series ask the same questions. [Use our tool: Shows Like The Walking Dead](/shows/similar/the-walking-dead) — algorithmically matched

The Last of Us

The Last of Us

2023–present
8.8IMDb
A fungal pandemic spreads through human hosts and creates violent, sometimes-intelligent creatures. Twenty years later, most of America's surviving population lives in quarantine zones controlled by a brutal military government. Joel, a smuggler who lost his daughter in the first outbreak, is hired to move a teenage girl named Ellie across the country. Ellie may be immune — the only immune person ever found. The second episode tells the entire story of two men who spent 20 years building a life together in an abandoned town, and it's one of the greatest hours of television ever produced.
Why it matters

Same core tension as TWD's best seasons — how much of your humanity can you sacrifice to protect someone you love? — but The Last of Us earns that question faster and more completely.

Station Eleven
02

Station Eleven

2021–2022
8.0IMDb
A flu pandemic kills 99% of humanity over three weeks. Twenty years later, the Traveling Symphony — a small company of musicians and actors — moves between surviving settlements in the Great Lakes region, performing Shakespeare and classical music for people who've lived their whole adult lives after the collapse. The show cuts back to the night of the outbreak, following a handful of people whose lives connect across the timeline. It's less violent than TWD but asks a question TWD never quite did: not just "how do we survive" but "what do we survive for."
Fear the Walking Dead
03

Fear the Walking Dead

2015–2023
6.9IMDb
Los Angeles, the first days of the outbreak — before anyone understands what's happening, before there are rules about who to shoot and when. The Madison Clark family navigates the collapse in real time. The first two seasons (the fall of LA and a journey by sea) are genuinely gripping. The show dips in quality midway but recovers in later seasons. If you've finished TWD and want more time in that universe, FTWD has eight full seasons and its own cast and locations.

The Post-Apocalyptic Survival Shows

The 100
04

The 100

2014–2020
7.7IMDb
Ninety-seven years after nuclear war made Earth uninhabitable, the survivors live in a space station falling apart. They send 100 juvenile delinquents to test whether the ground is survivable again. It is — but other people are already living there, having survived in ways the space people didn't expect. Seven seasons of increasingly complex moral choices as Clarke and her group do increasingly terrible things in the name of survival and discover that every faction they encounter has been doing the same.

7.7IMDb
A town in rural America is inescapable — drivers who try to leave find themselves looping back to the same stretch of road. The people already there have built a fragile community, learned the rules that keep them alive at night when the monsters come out, and spent years trying to understand what the place is. New arrivals keep showing up. No one knows why. It's TWD with the mystery of Lost layered over it — the same "survival horror with a large ensemble" structure, plus a mythology that seems designed rather than random.
Z Nation
06

Z Nation

2014–2018
7.1IMDb
Murphy is the only person ever to survive a zombie bite. His blood might be a cure. A scrappy team has to get him from New York to the CDC lab in California — across a zombie-infested America that has gotten very weird in the years since the outbreak. The show runs on gleeful camp and absurdism: a zombie baby, a zombie-human hybrid, a character named Warren who refuses to die. The lighter, funnier version of the same premise, and entirely aware of it.

The Collapse-of-Society Shows

Yellowjackets
07

Yellowjackets

2021–present
7.8IMDb
A girls' high school soccer team is flying to the national championship in 1996 when their plane crashes in the Canadian wilderness. The dual-timeline structure — survival in the woods and present-day, twenty-five years later — slowly reveals what they did to survive the winter. Something happened that the survivors have never spoken about. The show is Lord of the Flies with teen girls, a mystery underneath, and a supernatural element kept deliberately ambiguous.
The Wilds
08

The Wilds

2020–2022
7.2IMDb
A group of teenage girls is stranded on a deserted island after a plane crash — but someone engineered the crash. They're part of an experiment. The backstory episodes (one per character) are the best episodes in the same way Lost's flashbacks were: they make you understand each person before the group falls apart. Season 2 adds a parallel group of boys, which dilutes the dynamic slightly.
Falling Skies
09

Falling Skies

2011–2015
7.1IMDb
Aliens invaded Earth six months ago and destroyed most of the military. The remnants of humanity are forming resistance groups and fighting back while trying to protect the people who can't fight. Tom Mason leads a group called the 2nd Massachusetts Militia Regiment — a history professor turned guerrilla fighter. The alien threat changes and escalates each season. It's formulaic in the same comfortable way TWD is formulaic: a new threat each year, group dynamics under constant pressure.
Section 5

The Zombie Adjacents

iZombie
10

iZombie

2015–2019
7.9IMDb
Olivia "Liv" Moore is a medical examiner who is also a zombie, eating the brains of the deceased to function — and temporarily absorbing their memories and personality traits in the process. She uses those absorbed memories to help solve murders, and the personality shifts make her interesting in ways a standard procedural protagonist isn't. Lighter and funnier than anything on this list, but the zombie mythology is thoughtful and the show becomes genuinely good in its later seasons.
Kingdom
11

Kingdom

2019–2020
8.3IMDb
Joseon-era Korea, the 1600s. A plague spreading from the north turns people into something like zombies — fast, relentless, active in darkness. Crown Prince Lee Chang investigates after his father the king becomes ill, trying to understand what's happening before it reaches the capital. The political intrigue is as complex as the horror, and the show is gorgeous — period Korean production values, mountain landscapes, palace politics. One of the best things to come out of Korean streaming. Available dubbed or subtitled.
Black Summer
12

Black Summer

2019–2021
7.0IMDb
Three weeks into the zombie outbreak, in an unnamed American city. Rose is separated from her daughter in the chaos. She falls in with a group of strangers moving toward a stadium rumored to be a safe point. The show is structurally fragmented — each episode follows different survivor groups through the same time period, overlapping and eventually intersecting — and it's genuinely scary because nobody knows the rules yet. Less character depth than TWD, more pure dread.
Section 6

The Dystopian Future Shows

The Handmaid's Tale
13

The Handmaid's Tale

2017–present
8.5IMDb
A theocratic coup has transformed the United States into Gilead. Fertile women are assigned as Handmaids to powerful men — forced surrogates, their own identities erased, renamed for the men who own them. Offred (her name was June) remembers who she was before and refuses to stop. Elisabeth Moss is extraordinary. It's not zombie horror but it's the same "civilization has collapsed and here's who took power" premise, with even more specific and immediate political terror.
Snowpiercer
14

Snowpiercer

2020–2023
7.1IMDb
The Earth is frozen. The last of humanity lives on the Snowpiercer — a perpetually moving train circling the globe — and the train is organized by class: the wealthy in luxury at the front, everyone else compressed toward the back in increasingly desperate conditions. Layton, a detective from the tail, is brought forward to solve a murder and finds leverage he hadn't expected. Based on Bong Joon-ho's film. The train becomes a metaphor for every society that's ever existed.
Daybreak
15

Daybreak

2019
7.3IMDb
A nuclear blast hit Glendale, California. The adults turned into zombie-like creatures called Ghoulies. The teenagers survived and organized themselves into factions: jocks, gamers, drama kids, each controlling territory in the ruins of their high school. Josh, a Canadian loner, is looking for his girlfriend Sam in the chaos. Part post-apocalypse, part teen comedy, part John Hughes homage, cancelled after one season. Energetic, inventive, and tries things TWD would never attempt.
