Frequently asked about Legally Blonde
Common questions people search for, with answers written by us at MoviesPack.
Why does Elle decide to apply to Harvard Law School?
Elle initially applies to Harvard Law to win back her boyfriend Warner Huntington III, who broke up with her because he felt she was not serious enough for his political ambitions. She genuinely believes that if she can get into the same school and prove her intelligence, he will want to be with her again. However, as Elle immerses herself in law school and discovers a real aptitude for legal work, her motivation shifts from winning Warner back to proving her worth to herself.
How does Elle figure out that Chutney Windham is lying during the murder trial?
Chutney claims she was in the shower getting a perm when her stepmother Brooke was shot, and therefore did not hear the gunshot. Elle realizes this alibi is physically impossible because anyone with knowledge of hair care knows you cannot wet a fresh perm within 24 hours of the treatment — doing so would cause the curl to fall out. Since Chutney had just gotten a perm that same day, she could not have been in the shower, exposing her lie about her whereabouts and establishing her opportunity to commit the murder.
Did Brooke Taylor-Windham actually kill her husband?
No — Brooke is entirely innocent. The real killer is Chutney, Heyworth Windham's daughter from his first marriage, who was furious that her father had married a younger woman and changed his will in Brooke's favor. Chutney confesses on the stand after Elle demolishes her alibi, revealing that she had intended to shoot Brooke but accidentally shot her own father instead.
Why does Brooke refuse to tell Elle her alibi during trial preparation?
Brooke refuses to disclose her alibi because she was undergoing a secret liposuction procedure at the time of the murder — something she finds deeply embarrassing given that her entire fitness empire is built on the message of natural exercise and body positivity. Revealing the procedure would destroy her brand and public image. She trusts Elle enough to share the secret privately but insists it cannot be introduced in court, forcing Elle to find another path to the truth.
What happens to Warner by the end of the film?
Warner ends up alone and humiliated. After watching Elle excel academically and in the courtroom, he asks her to get back together, but Elle turns him down — she has grown beyond seeking his validation. His girlfriend Vivian, who had initially been hostile toward Elle, also ends their relationship after witnessing how shallow and threatened Warner truly is. The film uses Warner's fate to underline that Elle's journey was never really about him.
