Frequently asked about Constantine
Common questions people search for, with answers written by us at MoviesPack.
Why is John Constantine condemned to Hell despite fighting demons his whole life?
Constantine is condemned because he committed suicide as a teenager after being overwhelmed by his inability to shut out visions of angels and demons. In the film's rules, suicide is an unforgivable sin that guarantees damnation regardless of subsequent good deeds. His demon-hunting work is therefore driven by a desperate bargain: he hopes that by deporting half-breeds back to Hell he can buy enough favor to earn a place in Heaven before his lung cancer kills him.
What is the Spear of Destiny and why does Mammon need it?
The Spear of Destiny — also called the Spear of Longinus — is the lance used to pierce Christ's side at the crucifixion, and its blood-soaked tip carries divine power. Mammon, the son of Lucifer, needs it to breach the barrier between Hell and Earth so he can possess a human vessel (Isabel Dodson) and manifest physically in the mortal world. Without the Spear acting as a key, the treaty that keeps full demons from crossing over would prevent him from doing so.
Why does Gabriel, an angel, help Mammon rather than stop him?
Gabriel believes that unleashing Hell on Earth will force humanity to prove its worth through genuine suffering and choice, rather than receiving God's grace passively. In Gabriel's view, humans have grown complacent knowing Heaven exists, and only true adversity will reveal authentic faith and heroism. This makes Gabriel a tragic antagonist rather than an evil one — the plan is misguided idealism, not corruption, though Constantine ultimately stops it by invoking Lucifer's personal self-interest against it.
How does Constantine actually defeat Lucifer at the end, and why does Lucifer spare him?
Constantine slits his wrists to summon Lucifer, who must come to collect his soul personally since Constantine is dying. Rather than letting Lucifer take him, Constantine sacrifices himself to reveal the truth about Isabel to Lucifer — that Gabriel and Mammon conspired to use her — which gives Lucifer the motive to personally drag Mammon back to Hell and punish Gabriel. Lucifer then cures Constantine's cancer and sends him back to life precisely because he wants Constantine to remain damned; a living Constantine gives Lucifer more time to ensure he ends up in Hell rather than granting him a martyr's death that might tip the scales toward Heaven.
What happens to Isabel Dodson, and why couldn't she simply be declared a suicide like her twin?
Isabel was institutionalized after claiming to see demons, and she apparently jumped from a hospital roof — which on the surface looked like suicide, the same unforgivable sin that doomed John. However, Angela eventually learns that Isabel was actually murdered: she was thrown or manipulated into jumping as part of the conspiracy to use her body as Mammon's vessel, meaning her death was not a true act of self-will. This distinction matters because it means Isabel's soul was in Heaven rather than Hell, and John's final act of self-sacrifice is rewarded in part by Lucifer sending her soul to Heaven permanently.
